Survey
This is more of a survey than a blog.
We have a long break at Christmas and I am planning on taking the kids somewhere the first week of the new year. Our time is pretty flexible, so I say "week" and it could be more than that. We'll probably leave sometime in the week after Christmas and come back in the new year. How awesome would it be to watch the sunrise at the Grand Canyon on New Year's Day?
So. Me the lone driver, two kids, my golden retriever and our tent. I would be happy to stay in a couple of motels, but will also tent camp. My original plan was to drive south to the Gulf of Mexico - like Corpus Christi or something. My mom suggested Big Bend National Park which looks very cool (I have my parents in OK and my sister in TX on the way). We could also dirve Southwest and go to the Grand Canyon. I could stay with an Uncle and his family outside of Denver and then camp / hotel it the rest of the way.
i am terrified of scoprions. I would love to see a javalina. I am familiar with West Texas and love it (in the way that you can love West Texas) but have never been to Big Bend or the Grand Canyon.
Thoughts? This is just insane? This is awesome?

I think that might be unforgettable!
Sounds pretty awesome to me.
this sounds very much like something we did when I was growing up and while it had its ups and downs, it was visually awesome. the Grand Canyon just sort of resets my notions of scale each time I see it. It's pretty cold up there at that time of year...I seem to remember freezing when we slept in a car in Flagstaff one winter holiday, but don't know if I'd want to be in a tent.
Sounds awesome to me! I'm real big on staying home for Christmas, but a New Year's sunrise at the Grand Canyon sounds spectacular.
awesome! BIG BEND...i mean the grand canyon is amazing, but BIG BEND
Ah Texas, my home state. Big Bend would be awesome. Guadalupe Mountains is also nice if you've never been and it's a relatively short drive to Carlsbad, NM and the Caverns. CC is nice, but around Dec the water would be too cold, but just sitting on the beach might be cool. I don't want to scare you -- but I recommend keeping an eye on the border situation -- too much going on in Northern Mexico right now.
i imagine grand canyon must be very cold at that time of year. but oh, to see it in winter. i was stunned, i mean truly stunned, by that place. the size of it was so beyond what i'd imagined, and it was so beautiful. very close second for my favorite place this summer. (we were on the north rim, just fyi. and given the chance, i'd skip the south rim and go there again. just incredible.)
Either one would probably be awesome.
I saw a javelina in Arizona last month. It was crossing the road. I also saw a rattlesnake in my hotel parking lot. So I'm no help.
